An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Test Rig Design Engineer- Mechanical, to work for Rolls-Royce SMR in Derby or Warrington on projects that will contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the design project for a new nuclear power station and the establishment of a world class testing capability. About the Role:

The Test Rig Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical engineering design development of test rigs which provide data for a range of complex fluid system and mechanical problems.  The test rig designs will be developed through a series of gated reviews, requiring the use of systems engineering and process design techniques to develop robust solutions that meet the project requirements.

The Development Engineering organisation itself has responsibilities for proving that the SMR power station design meets its objectives and requirements. This will encompass the area of nuclear engineering as well as the broader scope of delivering a major infrastructure project.

About You:

You will be a Chartered Engineer (or working towards professional accreditation), Physical Sciences, Mathematics or a related discipline. You will also have:

  • Knowledge of mechanical design fundamentals.
  • Mechanical design knowledge of one or more of: complex mechanical structures, vessels, tanks, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, actuation methods, heating sources, low and high pressure system equipment.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles is desirable.
  • A willingness to challenge conventional thinking, with the desire to make a difference.

Key Responsibilities of the Role will be:

  • Apply systems and process engineering techniques to develop test rigs from concept through to detailed design and operation.
  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for a range of components and sub-systems.
  • Define and manage test rig requirements, including systems, components and installations.
  • Develop engineering assessments e.g. mechanical designs, component selection and heat balance calculations.
  • Develop design documentation including P&IDs and operating philosophies.
  • Work in a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver an optimised test rig
  • Work closely with power station design teams, suppliers, and external test houses.
  • Act as a technical representative for assigned test rigs at technical and project reviews.
