We’re partnering with a highly respected engineering solutions provider to find a Senior Design Manager with proven experience in electrical transmission and distribution (T&D). This is a key leadership role, supporting the design and delivery of high-voltage (HV) infrastructure across the UK, including projects for National Grid, SSEN and other major clients. You’ll be joining a technically capable and motivated team with a strong track record in delivering multi-disciplinary electrical infrastructure projects from concept through to commissioning. Key Responsibilities: -Lead multi-disciplinary design teams on high-voltage transmission and distribution projects across the UK (typically 33kV–400kV). -Oversee the full design lifecycle (FEED to closeout), ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and timely delivery to APM/PMP/PRINCE2 standards. -Take on the role of Design Manager or Project Manager for both design-only and EPC/Design & Build contracts, especially those in regulated electricity markets. -Ensure all deliverables comply with CDM 2015, NEC contracts, and utility-specific standards, including National Grid TP137, TP141, and ENA specifications. -Provide technical governance and assurance, including Principal Designer responsibilities and LCDAE coordination where required. -Engage with clients and stakeholders to support business development, write technical proposals, and shape project pipelines in the UK T&D market. -Mentor engineering teams, contribute to talent development, and drive innovation within the T&D engineering space. What We’re Looking For: -Degree-qualified engineer (Electrical or Power Engineering preferred) with 7+ years' experience in transmission and distribution design, particularly HV substations, overhead lines (OHL), and underground cable systems. -Proven leadership in National Grid and DNO/TO projects, with strong understanding of TP137, impressed voltage, earthing, and temporary works requirements. -Sound working knowledge of UK grid codes, design standards (NGESO, ENA, IEC), and safety regulations including NEBOSH/IOSH certifications. -Track record of managing multidisciplinary teams, budgets, and project risks in a highly regulated environment. -Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills. The successful candidate will be required to work on a hybrid basis from a regional client office, 1-2 days a week. The successful candidate will be expected to work full-time, on-site, from our client’s London office. Within this role, you will be overseeing and managing a variety of electrical projects, centred around a National Grid Substation, focusing on the development and installation processes. -Competitive day rate ranging from £650-£850 (depending on experience) -On-site working arrangement. Responsibilities: -Manage all site activities ensuring that work is being delivered in a safe and timely manner, and remaining complaint to the project requirements. -Ensure that all elements of the project are following the quality and safety standards set out for the National Grid. -Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (engineers, subcontractors, and clients), ensuring project requirements are being heard and met. -Keep up-to-date records and documentation of all site activities, in line with industry policies and procedures. -Assist in the delivery of SCADA and upgrades to automation systems. -Conduct and sit in on site meetings, toolbox discussions, and safety briefings. Requirements: -Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a relevant field, with a focus on power infrastructure and/or substations is ideal. -Must be SMSTS certified, with a National Grid Competent Person (CP) status. -Prior experience working on substation fields, ideally in transmission and distribution systems. -Solid grasp of SCADA, control systems, and data automation processes. -Strong communication and organisation skills, with previous leadership experience within a similar role. -Fire Warden and First Aid training is desirable.
