Transitioning into the Professional World

We recently spoke with Specialist Recruiter Maddie Smith about the reality of graduating and transitioning into the professional workplace. Our main takeaway? It isn’t spoken about enough, and graduates need more guidance whilst starting their professional journeys.
 
Her insight has prompted us to shed some light on the realities of this journey, recognising that “it isn’t all smooth sailing".

We want to share Maddie's challenges and valuable lessons, offering our top tips for graduates starting their professional journeys this summer...
 
1. Broaden your horizons: Explore avenues that were not initially on your career radar. Maddie was originally looking for jobs directly utilising her Psychology and Criminology degree, but she re-evaluated her interests along the way and decided that her dream job could be narrowed down to three focus areas: customer service, building relationships, and business management, leading Maddie to Blueprint.
 
Recruitment requires excellent communication, organisation, administration, and IT skills—proficiencies Maddie had developed at university. Remember, your degree is valuable, not solely because it prepares you for a specific job but because it equips you with a diverse skill set that can be applied across various industries!
 
2. Embrace the learning mindset: “It’s okay to feel overwhelmed at first”, but use this new opportunity to grow by "embracing the challenge of being thrown in at the deep end”. Avoid putting pressure on getting everything perfect straight away!

Settling into your first graduate job is a process, and each step is a milestone towards building a successful career. Establishing a career in recruitment is a learning curve and there's no easy shortcut to success in this industry. Take time to recognise your professional and personal progression.
 
3. Seek mentorship: Ask for guidance from experienced colleagues who have walked a similar path. A mentor can provide invaluable advice and help you navigate the challenges of entering the professional world. Their insights and support can make a world of difference in your journey.
